Electric vehicles will have a significant presence on our roads in the future, but if we don’t figure out how to reuse their components or extend their lives, we’re in trouble. Today, less than 5% of electric vehicle batteries are recycled or reused because processing spent batteries from EVs is a resource-, capital- and labor-intensive operation.

In many cases, it’s less expensive to simply manufacture a new battery than process and reuse old ones. But, the negative environmental impact from the extra waste generated through manufacturing is much greater.

At Xos, we’re excited to embrace innovative solutions to battery waste, which will only grow as more EVs take to the streets. We are dedicated to limiting waste, recovering value for our customers, and prioritizing sustainability.

To accomplish these goals, we are joining forces with Cox Automotive Mobility to remanufacture our batteries, extending their useful lives and minimizing the overall environmental impact.

What Does Remanufacturing Look Like?

We build our batteries to be durable and long-lasting so they can work as hard as our customers do. However, it’s an inescapable fact that all batteries degrade over time. When this happens, our partnership with Cox Automotive Mobility enables us to replace any worn-down cells with new ones so customers can get back on the road as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, worn-down cells are repaired and repurposed for second life use as stationary energy storage or in off-highway equipment like forklifts.

Remanufacturability isn’t a new concept. The distribution system in the automotive sector already takes advantage of remanufacturability. For example, you wouldn’t replace your entire car or junk it if your alternator stopped working; you’d simply repair the alternator. The same idea applies to our battery packs.

The main two reasons why we remanufacture are:

1. To extend the life of the batteries in customer’s trucks so they can do difficult work for longer.

2. To preserve high-quality components so that batteries can be transitioned to second-life uses. If we don’t remanufacture, the important parts of the batteries will degrade past the point of being useful for second-life applications.
