If you didn’t already know, “Xos” is short for exosphere, the outermost layer of the earth’s atmosphere. Our name speaks to our forward-thinking approach to building zero-emissions, fully electric commercial vehicles. With the climate crisis at the forefront of the news and, in many cases, at our very front doors, we believe sustainable commercial transportation is a vital part of securing a cleaner future.
Decarbonizing our roads is possible, and we’re proving it every day with our purpose-built technology. Of course, we don’t work in the EV industry for the accolades, but we’re still honored to be a 2021 Timmy Awards finalist in the “Tech for Good” category. Best Tech for Good: Xos Trucks
According to the EPA, in 2019 alone, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles racked up 318,030 million miles. And all those miles mean more greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane are sent into the atmosphere by the millions of tons.
In addition to the negative environmental impact, vehicle emissions also have adverse public health effects. In particular, it’s widely known and understood that climate change disproportionately affects BIPOC communities. These communities are more likely to live in areas with heavy pollution, near toxic facilities or roadways, or where there could be more floods or a higher likelihood of different climate-related incidences.
The health risks of airborne pollution are widely known. A recent report estimated that around 20,000 people die prematurely each year due to the detrimental effects associated with vehicle pollution.

Although there’s no one solution to fighting the climate crisis, accelerating the widespread adoption of commercial EVs is an important step in the right direction.
