Make the Right Charging Choice for Your Electric Fleet

Charging infrastructure decisions can make or break your fleet electrification journey. With so many options available, it can be difficult to know which charger is best for your electric fleet. Let’s take a closer look at the difference between L2 and DC chargers and an example of charge times using specs for our 2023 SV stepvan.

L2 vs DC Chargers

Level 2 (L2) chargers have become a popular choice for electric fleets due to their affordability and widespread availability. However, the charging process can be slower than other options as it requires a conversion from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). While  L2 chargers require less power and installation costs compared to DC chargers, they often lack the advanced features and charging speed that DC chargers offer. We recently installed L2 chargers for our customer Loomis at their Montebello location as part of their comprehensive plan to electrify their fleet.

On the other hand, for those looking for faster, more efficient charging, DC chargers are the superior choice. These chargers are more powerful and can charge batteries in a fraction of the time compared to L2 chargers. With advanced features such as remote monitoring, adjustable charging speed, and cutting-edge safety protocols, DC chargers are the ideal choice for electric truck owners seeking the ultimate charging experience. One thing to note, compatibility with some electric vehicles may be limited, so you should take into account your electric vehicle's age and model before opting for a DC charger.

Charge Times

The time it takes to charge an electric vehicle's battery depends on factors such as battery size and type of charger used. Our Xos 2023 SV medium-duty stepvan can be charged from 0 to 80% in roughly 6 hours using an L2 charger or around 1 hour  using a DC fast charger. Though these times are illustrative and may vary based on equipment utilization, charger specifications, and usage patterns, it’s perfect for those local delivery routes that head back to their terminals everyday for a recharge.
